Product Details
Merelani Mint Grossular Garnet, the magnificent centre stone in this ring, comes from only one region, the Merelani Hills in Tanzania. This gemstone is a cousin to the fairly newly discovered green gemstone, Tsavorite, found in the same region The material tends to come to the market in small spurts as pockets of the stone are discovered; we have experienced this and been frustrated in not being able to source the quality, colour and cut of the Merelani Mint Green Garnet that we were specifically sourcing for a client. The deep, vivid green colours in Tsavorite are caused by the same colouring agents as emerald: chromium, vanadium, and manganese. The lighter colour material, Merelani Mint Grossular Garnet contains lower concentrations of these with virtually no iron, resulting in the lighter fresher minty colour. Unlike many other gemstones, grossular garnets are not treated in order to increase their beauty or durability. The hardness (6.5-7 on the Mohs Scale) and lack of cleavage allow the gem to be polished to a very high lustre, resulting in crisp, bright stones. The challenging task is to be able to find clean gleaming gemstones of good colour saturation; stones above 1-2 carats in weight are rare.
This lively refreshing cushion cut Mint Green Grossular Garnet is enhanced by a halo of small white diamonds – elegant and effortlessly uncomplicated in design for someone with excellent understated taste to wear on their finger.
