Our Story

Michael Platt are independent Retail Jewellers and Master Goldsmiths situated in Wimbledon Village, London, SW19, established over thirty years ago, passionate about gemstones, diamonds and jewellery.

Timeline

Our experience and expertise in jewellery making and jewellery restoration spans over forty years. We pride ourselves in offering a very professional personal service to our clients with exceptional high standards in workmanship at excellent value.

We are well known and established as specialists in making unique beautiful Bespoke Jewellery in our in-store Workshop.

A design service is available where clients often deal directly with the Goldsmith who will make their bespoke piece. Working closely with clients, whether to create a truly unique special piece from new or existing jewellery or renovating or restoring treasured vintage jewellery, Michael Platt value and care for each and every job they undertake as well as their clients.

1985

In 1985, Michael Platt, an engineer by trade with a passion for gems and jewellery, knocked on the door of a Hatton Garden Workshop owned by Wayne Myers with a selection of his jewellery designs. An important partnership and friendship between designer and craftsman was forged that day. Wayne’s ability and talent to craft, interpret and create Michael’s designs from paper into beautiful living pieces of jewellery passed the very rigorous standards that Michael demanded. Wayne and Michael worked successfully together over the next few years designing and creating jewellery ranges for retailers. Unfortunately, they frequently felt disenchanted by the way their ranges were presented and sold; often with scant product knowledge, lack of enthusiasm, poor displays and low standards which led to, at best, a mediocre ‘retail’ jewellery experience. They felt they could do better.

1990

In 1990, Michael ventured into retail and opened No 1 Church Road, Wimbledon Village, SW19 with Wayne’s backing in the Hatton Garden Workshop. The shop was extremely small and compact but vibrant and glistening with wonderful jewellery for all occasions. They aimed to provide a pleasing and comfortable environment where jewellery could be beautifully displayed and their passion for the product, wide knowledge and high standards would lead to an enjoyable retail experience for the customer. They were delighted to find the formula worked and soon established a regular clientele, broadened mostly, at that time, by word of mouth recommendation.

2002

When in 2002 Michael retired, it was a natural progression for Wayne to move into the retail side of the business, splitting his week between the shop and workshop. Good fortune arrived in 2014 with the opportunity to expand the size of the shop. This meant, although still quite small in size, the customer serving area would be more spacious, designed particularly to retain the intimate ambience and, very significantly, a small on-site workshop could be added.

Present Day

The business has grown; the team has expanded but remains, small, caring and cohesive, with Designers working closely and jointly with the Goldsmiths. It is a fairly unique jewellery retail space, allowing Michael Platt clients to have a direct path with immediate access to the vast experience and opinions of professional Goldsmiths. All of the team are dedicated to their work and being the very best at what Michael Platt does well; handling customers’ precious jewellery pieces for renovation, restoration, valuation or re-design and particularly enjoying the fulfilment of producing beautiful unique jewellery pieces, making dreams come true!
