Emerald belongs to the ‘Beryl’ family; aquamarine also belongs to this family.
An emerald is not as hard as a ruby or sapphire and rates 7½-8 on the Mohs Scale of hardness. Emerald has many special qualities, but coloured stone professionals generally agree that emeralds are, most of all, all about colour.
Chromium, vanadium, and iron are the trace elements that cause emerald’s colour. The presence or absence of each and their relative amounts determine the exact colour of an emerald crystal. The finest emeralds are of a deep, lively transparent ‘emerald’ green, (colour varies according to source area) however most are clouded by inclusions referred to as ‘jardin’ or garden like inclusions.
Eye-clean emeralds are especially valuable because they are so rare. Emeralds tend to be more brittle than other gems and because of this, can be vulnerable, most are acceptably ‘oiled’ to fill and disguise fissures, this also enhances colour, penetrating the smallest imperfections making them less visible.
The oiling of Emeralds has been an acceptable treatment from ancient times from almost as long as they have been discovered and cut. Extra special care and handling should be taken of Emeralds and they should not be immersed for any lengthy time in water and especially not in chemicals.
