Product Details
Sphene is one of those magical gems that can enchant, the best quality gemstones as per our gemstone, display brilliant fire and flash three different colours. It is a lime/pear green stone that flashes orange and yellow. Originating from Madagascar we met a gemstone dealer at the Tuscon Fine Gem Show specialising in extremely unusual gemstones. This sphene by far and away pulled us in and we were unable to leave without it. It rates 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, so it’s more delicate than other gems and it is for this reason that it has been set into this magnificent pear-shaped bespoke pendant drop. The natural colouring of the gem led us to include a vivid round yellow diamond to enhance and finesse the pendant design and is now available for you to love and cherish.
Sphene is a collector’s gem, it belongs to the titanite mineral group, occurring as an accessory mineral in granitic and calcium-rich metamorphic rocks, and is particularly rare in large clear gemstones above 5 carats. Sphene has one of the highest dispersions of any mineral: meaning the mineral’s ability to break white light into spectral colours. The dispersion of sphene is 0.051. A diamond’s dispersion, by comparison, is 0.044. It’s this high number that helps to give the stone such an intense “fire,” showcasing multiple colours, especially when it’s well-cut.
